What types of animals do you treat?
We primarily provide ophthalmic care for dogs and cats. However, Dr. Whitney Young has specialized training and experience treating a wide variety of species, including equine, exotic animals, and some livestock. If you have a unique case, please contact us to see if we can help.
Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?
While referrals from your primary care veterinarian are encouraged and help us ensure continuity of care, they are not strictly required. If you’re concerned about your pet’s vision or eye health, you’re welcome to contact us directly to discuss your pet’s needs.

What should I bring to my pet’s eye appointment?
Please bring:
- Any referral notes or medical records from your primary vet
- A list of bottles of your pet’s current medications
- Your pet’s insurance information (if applicable)
If your pet was referred, your veterinarian can also submit records using our Referring Veterinarian Form.
Where is your clinic located?
Blue Ridge Veterinary Eye Specialists has partnered with several primary care veterinarians to offer services while we work on our permanent building. You can find us at the following locations for your scheduled appointment.
Locations:
- Tuesday – We provide surgery services through your primary care veterinarian’s office
- Wednesday – Fairview Animal Hospital – 867A Charlotte Hwy, Fairview, NC 28730
- Thursday – Mills River Animal Clinic – 200 Old Turnpike Rd, Mills River, NC 28759
- Friday – Evergreen Veterinary Hospital – 275 Smokey Park Hwy, Building 300, Asheville, NC 28806

What are your hours of operation?
We are open Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM.
Please note that we do not offer emergency or after-hours services at this time.
Do you accept pet insurance?
Yes. We are happy to provide detailed invoices that you can submit to your pet insurance provider for reimbursement. Trupanion allows us to submit your claim in real time and tells us at the appointment what portion you need to cover. Please check with your insurer regarding your plan’s coverage for specialty ophthalmology services.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept most major credit cards and CareCredit. Payment is due at the time of service. At this time, we do not offer in-house financing, but we are committed to providing clear and fair pricing for all services. Learn more about our Payment Options.
What are common signs of eye problems in pets?
If you notice any of the following signs, your pet may benefit from an eye exam:
- Squinting or excessive blinking
- Eye discharge or tearing
- Cloudiness or changes in eye color
- Pawing at the eye
- Swelling or redness
- Vision changes or bumping into objects

We provide a full range of specialized diagnostics and surgical services, including:
- Slit lamp biomicroscopy
- Tonometry (eye pressure testing)
- Electroretinography (ERG)
- Ocular ultrasound
