Certified Eye Screenings for Breeding and Service Animals

OFA Exams

Blue Ridge Veterinary Eye Specialists conducts OFA eye exams to screen for inherited eye conditions, aid in responsible breeding of purebred dogs, and ensure healthy vision for service animals.

Supporting Breeding Standards with Precision Eye Examinations

These examinations are a critical part of maintaining high standards, especially for purebred dogs intended for breeding, working, or service roles.

Led by Dr. Whitney Young, a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, we are proud to provide OFA-compliant eye exams with professionalism, compassion, and clinical precision.

What Are OFA Eye Exams?

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) provides a standardized protocol for eye exams used to detect inherited eye diseases in breeding dogs. These screenings are performed by diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) and help identify genetic conditions that could be passed on to future generations.

During an OFA eye exam, we conduct a thorough evaluation of your dog’s:

  • Eyelids and eyelashes
  • Cornea
  • Iris
  • Lens
  • Retina and optic nerve

We use specialized equipment to inspect each structure of the eye for abnormalities.

What to Expect at Your Pet’s Appointment

OFA exams are quick and non-invasive. The visit typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and does not require sedation. We will:

  • Perform a dilated ophthalmic exam on your dog using advanced equipment
  • Document any findings according to OFA guidelines
  • Provide you with the necessary documentation for submission to the OFA registry

Note: Pupils are dilated for optimal examination, so your dog may experience light sensitivity for a few hours after the exam.

Registering Your Pet with OFA

Before your appointment, we recommend registering your dog through the OFA’s online portal:

This ensures all documentation is processed smoothly and allows for easier submission and recordkeeping.

Why OFA Eye Certification Matters

OFA eye certifications support responsible breeding and early detection of inherited diseases. They help:
  • Promote the health and longevity of future generations
  • Maintain breed standards
  • Assist in early intervention for ocular diseases
  • Support the credibility of working and service animals
Whether you’re a breeder, handler, or simply committed to your pet’s well-being, an OFA eye exam offers peace of mind and valuable insight into their ocular health.
