Our expert team at Blue Ridge Veterinary Eye Specialists provides thorough and compassionate eye exams for pets across Western North Carolina and surrounding states.
Expert Veterinary Eye Care
Regular veterinary eye exams play a crucial role in preserving your pet’s vision, detecting disease early, and improving their comfort and quality of life.
Led by board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Whitney Young, our practice delivers advanced specialty eye care. Whether your pet is squinting, bumping into furniture, or has been referred by your primary care veterinarian for an eye concern, we’re here to help.
What Happens During a Veterinary Eye Exam?
Our comprehensive eye exams are tailored to each pet’s unique needs. We use a wide range of diagnostic tools to assess ocular health and pinpoint potential concerns.
- A typical exam may include:
- Schirmer Tear Test to evaluate tear production and screen for dry eye
- Tonometry to measure intraocular pressure and detect glaucoma
- Fluorescein Staining to identify corneal ulcers, scratches, or abrasions
- Slit-Lamp Biomicroscopy for detailed examination of the cornea, lens, and anterior eye
- Indirect Ophthalmoscopy to assess the retina and optic nerve
This full-spectrum evaluation allows us to diagnose conditions like cataracts, corneal ulcers, dry eye, glaucoma, retinal disorders, and more—early and accurately.
Why Regular Eye Exams Matter
Pets can’t tell us when their vision is deteriorating or their eyes are uncomfortable. Many conditions develop gradually, and without professional evaluation, signs may go unnoticed. Routine veterinary eye exams help:
- Catch vision problems before they cause lasting damage
- Provide early treatment for chronic or progressive eye diseases
- Prevent discomfort and preserve quality of life
- Monitor systemic health conditions that can affect the eyes
Senior pets, short-nosed breeds, and animals with chronic health issues may benefit greatly from routine ophthalmic care.
OFA Eye Exams for Breeding and Service Dogs
We are proud to offer OFA eye certification exams to evaluate breeding animals and service dogs for inherited eye conditions. These exams follow ACVO-approved protocols and are submitted directly to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).
